This offers a significant reduction in weight and provides advanced fatigue and damage resistance characteristics. For example, the A's sidestick control — introduced with full fly-by-wire by Airbus on the A is the same distance from the throttle as on other Airbus passenger aircraft.

Braking: The Brake-to-Vacate system helps ease airport congestion and reduce the amount of time an aircraft remains on the runway. Prior to that, the Airbus A had a complex gestation which at one time involved a joint study with Boeing on a seat Very Large Commercial Transport. At one time, Airbus even considered a flying wing design for the A, but this was abandoned for more traditional configurations which led eventually to the current oval double-deck section. The Airbus A made its first transatlantic flight to Medellin, Colombia, on 10 January to test engine performance at high airport altitude.
