Upon introducing their signature sleek cribs, highchairs, and nursery furniture in , Bloom Baby has grown into a multimillion-dollar business, while breaking new ground in engineering and the use of eco-friendly materials—Bloom Baby uses only sustainable wood sources, and no toxic wood preservatives or fiberboard, and all the plastic and metal parts are completely recyclable.
The four partners of Bloom live all over the world Mexico City, Hong Kong, Australia, and the Bay Area, natch , giving their products truly global appeal. They were all friends before starting the company, and becoming parents gave them common ground as they decided to crack the problem of ugly baby furniture.
Did you come up with the concept for Bloom Baby before or after you had kids? After we had kids of course! Before having kids, parents including us know nothing about baby brands and products. Like many businesses, Bloom was started to solve our own problems; in our case, as parents seeking out modern, safe baby gear.
We figured that others must feel similarly and that better products can and should be made. The number of recalls and safety issues are really unfortunate. Many manufacturers make their products to just barely pass the minimum USA requirements, and sometimes that is not sufficient. We regularly review the recall lists and intentionally design our products to not have the common safety problems that plague others.
Further, we sell our products in over 50 countries and design them to pass all the regulations in all the different countries. As new requirements have been added each year, we have always passed with ease since our products have already been tested for similar requirements somewhere else in the world. Was this always a goal of yours? The wheels for an actual business started turning when I was helping Liz design her first nursery, and we were both so disappointed in the soft goods offering available for babies at the time.
I remember she got these red wide-leg sweatpants in high school from a popular-at-the-time catalog that I then got, then her sister got, then others. They sound horrible now, but they were incredible at the time. I was hooked on her clear vision from very early on. How has that affected your dynamic as co-founders of Lewis? We can be discussing the color values of a strike-off one minute and debriefing a particularly hideous night of sleep the next.
Lizzy: It really is amazing how our conversations can go any which way, and we can always come back to what we know needs to get done. There is an empathy when you really understand what someone has been through or is going through that is so important in any sort of partnership — business, marriage or otherwise.
Hanna Nakano is a Washington, D. Shopping Cart. That curvy frame enables your baby to rock herself gently and naturally, a movement she is sure to find comforting. A great finishing touch is the carry bag, like a sleeping bag to slide the rocker into and with long handles to sling over your shoulder — and the fabric is better quality than the bags you find on most travel cots. The multifunctionality offered by some other baby rockers has definitely been sacrificed for the sake of simplicity and sheer gorgeousness.
This means that the coco bloom is only suitable for use until your baby can sit up unaided, roughly up to about 7 months, which may make the price tag look a little steep.
