I have one box filter on my gallon tank, lots of debris I would love to hear your advise. Will it be a stupid idea to put both the power filter and box filter in a gallon tank? Or just enlight me if you have any insight on my situation.
I just cleaned out my 10 gallon tank and broke the valve on my old box filter. Was glad to be able to find another box filter on line. So I went ahead and ordered one. Knew I would never be able to find one in my pet store. I do want to check up on the battery pumps in case our electricity goes out. Loved this article very informative. A well written article that still answers questions today. Wish I'd held onto my old box filters Gonna try and locate one for my fry tank.
I recently bought an old, "vintage" aluminum frame 10 gallon aquarium and I will be adding a box filter to it. My local fish store still sells them for 9 dollars! I've also found a little aquarium ornament from the 50's made in japan on ebay to complete my kitsch tank. My platy fry are going to love their retro home. Great essay. I agree, completely. I left the hobby in and returned in The missing box filter and the missing independent Mom and Pop aquarium shop, have left me with a frown.
There are the hand full of shops that you may walk in that have that familiar and comforting sound if the compresor in the back room and the bubbles as you walk the isles, but they are fewer and fewer. I am planning a fish room and there will be a central air compresor with box filters and sponge filters. I fullishly gave away my box filters a couple years ago when I wasn't running any aquariums.
Now I can't find find any locally. I have used them temporarily with a power head to quickly clear the water after disturbing the tank. I love my box filters! While the noise from pump and filter does take getting used to, especially in the bedroom, I lose far less fry to the box filters.
I do use some power filters on larger tanks, but overall prefer the boxes. Are you kidding me? I just published this like 5 minutes ago. You're a fast reader. Good to hear you use different kinds.

Also, be sure to clean out the intake vents. Air stones. Air stones tend to load up with hard water deposits under my tap water conditions; they also may get coated with slime.
Dirty air stones can be refurbished by cleaning with an algae scrub pad and a soaking in a strong bleach solution. Check valves. Depending on the quality of your check valves, you may wish to replace them every year or so. You can test them by blowing on them yuck! Air Pumps. Inexpensive air pumps may be replaced periodically, or if you have an aptitude for working with small machine parts, you may consider replacing flappers and diaphragms as needed. I have found that rotating individual air pumps in and out of service seems to refresh some of them: the period of disuse seems to allow the moving parts to reform themselves.
Cheaper quality airline will harden with age and may become brittle. Check the airline periodically for signs of deterioration. A high quality standard tubing, such as Python brand, or a silicone tubing is a good long term investment. Volume one has tips from the days when corner filters were common - you can see how to make them from plastic funnels, disposable clear plastic cups, and plastic food containers. There are also instructions for modifying standard non air stone driven models to use 1 inch lift tubes.
Owstrow, Marshal E. Hauppauge: Barron's Educational Series, This book describes using corner filters that have been modified into "turbo" models and has a very enlightened explanation for the time on how media can become biologically active. James S. Koga jskoga cpp. The Lee Triple Flow: Easily available airstone driven model The Lee Economy Corner Filter: an example of the simple non-airstone type of corner filter.
How it Works. The corner filter works on the principle of an " air lift ". A stream of bubbles moving up a tube also pushes water up with it. Water flows into the top, sides or bottom vents of the filter to take its place. As the water flows through the filter, it passes through filter media. The diagram shows the path that air and water take through the filter; this is another example of the simple, non airstone type Inexpensive to obtain and operate.
They just don't cost very much. Since you are buying media in bulk, your supplies are purchased at the lowest possible unit cost. What can I say? Unless you hide it with plants or decor, it sticks out like a sore thumb. And if the media is dirty, it looks really bad A Rationale Much of the aquarium hobby seems to be driven by a boyish fascination with hardware it is a male dominated market.
I'm sure this is a stupid question. I realize that I can regulate the air output of the pump, but how can I approximate the flow rate through the media. Trying to increase anaerobic BB and I was going to put Denitrate in it and wanted to keep below 50 gph. So I guess I am asking what 50 gph output of bubbles look like?
I feel idiotic asking this. You only have to try this once to be a. I haven't used one of these filters in years, since the new outside filters came on the market. I do have one submersible filter that I keep in my 20 gallon tank and it has a charcoal filter and a bio filter in it. It works great.
I used to have an outside pond that I made a homemade filter for and I used the plastic sponges, along with some volcanic rock.
It worked great. There is really no end to what you can use for filter media. Health Problems. Freshwater Pets. Freshwater Aquariums.

Most corner filters are reasonably efficient filters, but corner filters require a lot of maintenance, and the regular maintenance of the filter requires the replacement of the filter media. If you have a corner filter, you should consider getting a second filter so that you do not remove all of your bacteria bed every time you clean the filter.
Removal of the biological filter media and its bacteria bed will cause your tank to cycle again, which can be fatal to your fish. Usually, the biggest issue with corner filters is that they are often used in small tanks and bowls , where you can least afford to be losing water volume and space to an internal filter.
