The general policy of IELTS is to ensure test integrity and to promote genuine reporting of results by test takers. As a part of encouraging genuine reporting of results, recognising organisations which have TRFs submitted to them by test takers are able to verify the TRF and test results on our Online Verification System.
In addition, our test integrity policy includes a principle that test takers who commit malpractice may be banned from sitting all IELTS tests for up to two years. It is common for people to achieve a different band score for each skill and completely normal to have a difference of up to two bands between skills. This occurs regardless of the language being tested and the type of language test taken. Listening and Speaking are often the strongest skills for most people.
Every IELTS test is carefully produced and tested to ensure a consistent level of difficulty across all the test versions. Band 4 Limited user Your basic competence is limited to familiar situations. You frequently show problems in understanding and expression. You are not able to use complex language. Band 3 Extremely limited user You convey and understand only general meaning in very familiar situations.
There are frequent breakdowns in communication. Band 2 Intermittent user You have great difficulty understanding spoken and written English. Band 1 Non-user You have no ability to use the language except a few isolated words. Band 0 Did not attempt the test You did not answer the questions.
Individual test scores Scores for each of the four skills are equally weighted. Your overall band score Overall band scores are calculated to the nearest whole or half band.
You have a full operational command of the language. You have a fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. You have an operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations.
Generally you have an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings.
