If a voter does not register with a political party, the voter will be registered as unaffiliated. For example, a registered Republican may only vote in the Republican Party primary.
Unaffiliated voters may choose the Democratic, Libertarian, Republican, or nonpartisan ballot if available in a primary election. In a general election, voters may vote for the candidate s of their choice, regardless of party. My students had not thought about that. There was a field of at least 16 at one point with a very wide range of skills and backgrounds. By November, it was only Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton for the major parties, the ones who actually can win such an election, or Jill Stein and Gary Johnson, who of course had no chance.
As it turned out, in Michigan one of the key states in delivering electoral votes for Trump , Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 10, votes. Stein got 51, votes that would probably have gone to Clinton, so Trump got the state's 16 electoral votes. In Wisconsin, another key and surprise state that went for Trump, his margin over Clinton was 22,, while Stein got 31, votes.
If not for Stein, those 10 electoral votes likely would have gone to Clinton.
