Now, at Catholic funerals, you usually get a little program. This looked like a mimeographed copy of some lyrics. Something you might hand out at a rehearsal. I had heard of a volunteer choir We made our way to the center aisle, but there was a line. Then Jim saw some empty seats over on the left, so we went back over the entered aisle left.
Got up to the empty seats and there was a rope and security guard. It was family. It was like a magic trick. Or maybe she let anyone in who asked. We sat down. Suddenly, Jim saw Donna McKechnie there in the center aisle. He signaled her over. Her face broke out is a big grin and she joined us, me in the middle. A Chorus Line. Donna was there at the start of it all. She played an iconic role in his show. She danced an iconic dance.
Clothes a little loud and flowery. Jim named them all. But one I remember. Michael Bennett. The man who conceived it all. They changed it, eventually. Audiences needed to see the win. We love her too much for her to fail.
Well, god bless youtube. In her case, to dance. Surrounding us in the side aisles was a volunteer choir of Great people of the theater were in that choir, including Sheldon Harnick, my favorite lyricist in the world.
When they sang, the sound came from all sides. Marvin's music was absolutely marvelous. The sound is beautiful. I enjoyed his humor years back on talk shows. Although I knew neither of them very well, they were both wonderful and creative people and we're always welcoming and encouraging the young intern I was at the time. May they both rest in eternal piece.

My family told me not to bother him, but finally I just had to approach him. I found myself frozen in one spot while my thoughts were traveling back to Manhattan and to the walk up apartment on the Westside where: Marvin grew up, where he conquered the piano, and where he and his sister Terri played on the fire escape on warm summer days.
I remember being in those rooms in Marvin's father Max had died suddenly at age I was making fruit salad with Marvin's mother Lily, her eyes overflowing with tears. Don asked if I would like to sing in Marvin Hamlisch's upcoming symphony concert in Hartford as one in the trio of girls to perform At The Ballet.
As I walked out on air I saw dozens of girls waiting to audition for Mr. Pippin, clearly fate had intervened. Or as Marvin would say Timing, timing is everything! Following the Hartford concert, Marvin was my boss.
What I did for Love became my song and I had the great honor over the next four years to perform as Marvin's featured vocalist in concert halls and outdoor amphitheaters across the country and at the Albert Hall in London.
Not everyone knows that while Marvin was doing those symphony concerts, he was helping B'nai B'rith and other Jewish organizations raise millions of dollars for Israeli bonds. He was his parent's son. Before the war broke out, Marvin's parents fled their home in Vienna Marvin's father Max, an accomplished musician as well as a student of history, was sensing the danger ahead.
Although they found themselves strangers in a strange new city, Marvin's mother and father were steadfast in their Jewish faith and identity. Over the years, they welcomed scores of refugees to America through their Manhattan livingroom. I attended the Viennese Opera Ball when Marvin's father conducted the orchestra.
I helped Marvin pick out his Park Ave. In the summer there were visits with Lily and David, Marvin's nephew in the Massapequa Park home that Marvin had lovingly purchased for his mother. As time went by, Marvin had more Broadway hits and there was less time for concerts.
I went to the West Indies to do a film, fell in love and had two babies. I saw Marvin several times over the ensuing years: when he'd come to California to visit his sister Terri , or when he wanted me to meet a new girlfriend, or sing for a Temple Anniversary, see his snazzy new vacation home, or get my opinion of a new song or musical score.
In , he met his beautiful wife Terre and it was evident that he had discovered a new kind of peace in her love. My heart goes out to his beloved Terre and David at this time of stunning loss. In I was raising my two children in Northern California and working in a school for dyslexic children.
When I saw that Marvin was scheduled to be in Sonoma. I needed his help, so I called to ask if he would come and squeeze in a benefit concert for the school's scholarship fund on the occasion of it's 25th Anniversary.
Marvin did not hesitate. Accompanied by his wife Terre and long time friend and manager extraordinaire Ed Yo. Marvin came and delivered for me, and for the kids, who needed his special help. Marvin Hamlisch's generosity of spirit was equaled only by his enormous talent and musical heart. Marvin invited us to lunch. Once settled, with a view of the Park, we picked up as if no time had passed at all.
It was always like that with Marvin, he was quick, quizzical, concerned and as always genuine. Marvin Hamlisch was unabashedly and unapologetically himselftake it or leave itthe real deal. He told me at that luncheon that he was going to slow down his concert schedule hardly and wanted to make sure that I knew that He Did Not Like Getting Old!!
As he went to leave, he bent down to kiss me softly goodbye, I have been in a wheelchair, due to Multiple Sclerosis, for over a decade. I treasure that sweet kiss. Back in the day, when I was Marvin Hamlish's featured vocalist, at the end of every concert, when the audience clamored for an encore, Marvin opened his arms in that graciously grand gesture and called me back out to sing a tribute he composed to honor Josephine Baker entitled Come Light The Candles After a sharp attention grabbing verse the slow beckoning yet plaintive chorus begins And you'd say.
Come Light the Candles so the party can begin Sing tomorrow in Just one more time. Just when I think I see those candles growing dim Your song plays one more time Closing with Marvin's signature: those long deliciously extended notes and a finish that will not fail to get us all out of our seats. Though those days are gone You'll live on and on and on And your song plays one more time One More Time! Bravo Maestro, sleep peacefully my sweet friend. Sandra Voris Leanza. My niece sang with his orchestra and loved working with him. My condolences to Mrs. Hamlisch and his family. A true artist has been lost. What a incredibly gifted and talented man!! He was the opening number for the new Westhampton Performing Arts Center. I was lucky to have a photo with him. Mid 90's or was it mid 80's to late 80's NYC Time Square area rain storm I duck under a canopy to catch a cab at a hotel.
Rushing out the door is a tall guy as I hail the cab he grabs the cab before I can make a further move. Next thing they begin to take off rain is coming down in buckets the cab pulls back in the guy invites me to share the cab apologies for running off. I look at him say hello and realize who it is be fore I could say another word he says I am Marvin Marvin Hamlisch and shakes my hand. He then says were are you headed my treat the cab fare we chatted briefly about my visit to NYC for the short cab ride he shook my hand as I got out of the cab and we wished each other a good day.

I tried so hard not to be noticed as I listened to him rehearse some of the songs we all know. In the middle of his rehearsal, he looked up at us in the first box on the second level and smiled ear to ear. I was hoping to be as close to him as I could without him noticing because I did't want to interrupt the reheasal and could hear as much music as I could.
His spontaneous and genuine response to us was as memorable as his musical reheasal. Marvin Hamlisch wrote my favorite song of the s and one of my favorite songs of all time which is called "The Way We Were".
This song became part of my personality and I hold the melody and lyric within me even today. Thank you for sharing your music and your ideas, Mr. We will always love you!
